Jefferson Becomes President
The Election of 1800
As you already know the first few elections were completed in a very interesting way with ALL of the candidates running together. The man with the most votes would become President, while the gentlemen in second place would become Vice President. Seems easy enough correct? Well, that was not really the case in the election of 1800.

Jefferson's Views
Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican who favored views that were much different than the outgoing President John Adams, who was a Federalist. The differences would be seen as he takes office and begins to run the country according to his own ideas of government and how it should operate.

Marbury v. Madison
Before leaving office, President John Adams passed the Judiciary Act of 1801 to create 16 new federal judgeships and then attempted to fill them all with Federalists judges. Some of Adams' appointments were made so late that they documents needed were not delivered to the Candidates in time. The new president, Thomas Jefferson, ordered the remaining documents to not be delivered angering some of the appointed men such as William Marbury.
