The Louisiana Purchase
The Purchase
American settlers have been moving west since the American Revolution ended, settling in the region between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. New Orleans, located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, became more and more important to the United States as it controlled the flow of ships in and out of the River, used to send supplies to our new settlers and their goods to markets. After the Mississippi was closed by the Spanish, who took control of the land from France, Jefferson realized that the United States needed to control New Orleans.

Task 4:
Please click the buttons above and review the information. When you have completed reading and watching the videos you must make your way to Edmodo Task 4. For this task you must explain to me why the Louisiana Purchase was so significant, or important, to the United States including the benefits we gained. Please tell me what this did to the size of the United States as well as how much we paid for it (let me know if you think it was a good deal too!). You must also explain to me how President Jefferson, who is a Democratic-Republican, felt about this purchase, providing me with some specific details.

The Exploration
After President Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory he was very excited to explore the land and the Natives who called it home. Jefferson was very interested to see if there was a water route that would allow Americans to travel to the Pacific Ocean, and if the land contained any valuable natural resources. He organized an expedition and selected two men to lead the journey.

Task 5:
After reviewing ALL of the links above you should move to Task 5 in Edmodo. I would like you to explain to me the purpose of Lewis and Clarks expedition. What did they, along with President Jefferson have in mind for this journey. Secondly, describe what the journey was like, and some of the Native American tribes and new animals they came into contact with (Discovering Lewis and Clark will help with this). Finally, explain to me why Sacagawea was so important to the expedition.
