The War of 1812
A Declaration of War
Many young members of Congress began to call for war with Great Britain. Known as the War Hawks, they felt that Britain could not be trusted. And to be honest, who can blame them? Great Britain was still taking our men and forcing them into the British Navy, sometimes directly off from our own coast. Also, it was later discovered that Britain was supporting Tecumseh in his plans against the United States. These young War Hawks lead by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun wanted to stop the British influence of the Native Americans, gain more land in Canada, and put Great Britain in her place.
Others in Congress were not so ready for war, fearing that another battle with Britain may not turn out as well as the American Revolution. The United States is still in its infancy they believed, and would be unable to match the military might of Britain. When James Madison was elected president in 1808 as successor to Jefferson, he found it difficult to continue the peace Jefferson was trying to balance between Britain and the United States. By 1812 he decided that Congress must vote to go to war or remain on it's current path. The War Hawks succeeded in gaining enough votes, James Madison was reelected in 1812, and the United States declared War on Great Britain once again.

Task 8:
After reviewing all of the links above I would like for you to tell me about the War of 1812. You will complete a Flowboard for this Task and submit it to me on Edmodo under Task 8. You will find the Flowboard app under the "Creating" tab on the iPad. Please give me the location of TWO important battles and whether the Americans or the British were successful. Second, I would like you to describe the significance of Plattsburgh to the War of 1812. Use the readings about the Battle of Plattsburgh to help you do this. Finally, please tell me how the War of 1812 ended. Who won? Who lost? What did each country gain? All of the questions can be answered on separate Flowboard pages and when you have the entire presentation done you can share it and send me the link.
